Battle Plan For The Guitarist

Owning more equipment will not automatically make you a better musician. However, I would like to explain why adding a few musical weapons to your guitar arsenal can be useful. My setup is really simple yet effective.

The first thing I want to mention is the 8 track. You can also get a 4 track, but these are usually of lower quality. I didn't end up getting one until I had already been playing for several years, but I should have purchased one much sooner. A recording device might sound like something that is only meant for the advanced musician, but I would recommend purchasing one even as a beginner. You will be able to hear how well you have been progressing by playing back something that you recorded a few months before, and then comparing it to how you are playing at the present time.

It is extremely nice to be able to create music by mixing your guitar parts together. I could stay entertained much longer by playing a melody over a harmony. You can only play one guitar part at a time with a guitar and amp.

Being able to plug headphones directly into the 8 track is another benefit. You can still create music in the middle of the night without having to worry about being too loud. This especially comes in handy for me since most of my musical ideas come to me in the later hours of the night. Look for something that has a USB port in case you ever want to upload your recordings to a computer.

Another piece of equipment that has worked very well for me is a digital multiple effects pedal. Mine came with plenty of presets which made playing my guitar playing much more fun. It can actually make a cheap amp sound much better since it can simulate the sounds of many high quality amps. It lets you choose amp combinations, allowing you to mix the sounds of different amps together so that you can come up with your own custom sound. For example, you can take a Marshall amp and mix it with a Fender amp to be more unique.

So there you have it. Just a couple of basic yet awesome guitar accessories that make all the difference. The cool thing is that (you will need an extra chord by the way) you can hook up the digital effects pedal directly to the 8 track so that you can use the built in drum machine while you are recording. It's nice to be able to keep tempo while you are trying to record music.

So I can play my guitar, use a drum machine, and record music with my headphones on at 2am. You can be alone but it's like there is a party going on in your room that only you can hear.

One more benefit I would like to add about the effects pedal is that it has a built in noise gate as well. I
